Quick Fix: FieldSet Title Truncation
Thursday, August 23, 2007, 1:46 pm
Filed under: actionScript, components, flex, jwo_lib

While waiting to get my hands dirty on my new contract, I decided to fix the title issue with my FieldSet component. It now truncates the text if the text’s width tries to extend beyond the constraints of the border. There were a few house keeping tasks done inside as well. Get the latest from the Google Project here.

Weekly riddles to continue soon

You may have noticed there aren’t any new weekly riddles. That is partly due to the fact that I am starting a new contract and getting into the swing of things. And then of course summer activities also get in the way.

The other issue is that I don’t like posting riddles that I have not completed and seeing as I have only figured out the easy to moderately difficult ones, I feel I am not challenging you folks. So I will be surfing the web sometime to get some real challengers. Stay tuned.

Jesse Warden had posted a great read awhile back about the year in review regarding the demand of Flex and Flash developers.  A great read indeed.  I figured I would update the essential links with 2 to my previous articles on contracting advice and the one he has as well.  If you have any other links pertaining to this subject matter (i.e. Contracting, Consulting, TeleCommuting, etc.) please send em my way!

My Experience installing CS3

There are 4 words that immediately come to mind when reflecting on my just-finished installation of Adobe’s CS3 Creative Suite.

PAIN IN THE ASS!!!

My God! What happened to simple installations of their products?  It took me only a mere minute to uninstall Flash 9 Public Alpha.  Another minute to uninstall the various versions of the Flash Player.  So why did it take nearly an hour to install this beast?

And the time spent is really not what pisses me off the most.  As a vigilant developer, I have partitioned my hard drive on my laptop into 3 sections for ease of organization, security, sharing and defragging:

  • C: Operating System – 10GB
  • D: Program Files – 20GB
  • E: Files – 50GB

So normally when installing software I install on my D drive.  Its a simple half-second procedure to swap the C: for the D: in destination installation folder.  Then things proceed normally.  CS3 however does not give you the option to install everything the way you, the consumer, should be able to.  I was still able to install a good gig of crap on D: however Adobe insists on putting shit called “shared components” on the C: drive.  Am I not capable of directing future installs to the shared component directory if need be?  Does Adobe lack faith in its consumers to install their software in a place other than the default C: drive?  What the hell is the point of having separate partitions if they still insist on adding, well … more crap to a drive I have specified as “off-limits” to all but the most necessary applications and drivers?

WTF!!!  I am royally pissed at Adobe by this experience.  This is the same shit Apple pulls on its iTunes & iPod users regarding files, updates, libraries.  Let’s hope the few time I actually use Flash or Fireworks is worth the hassle of their stupid installer.

Updated Invaluable Links for Flex/Flash Developers

Today is my last day as a Flex Consultant at Fidelity Investments.  Being that, I had to do a little “brain-dumping” into some of my colleagues about the work I have done here.   This led to the discussion about the whole mx framework and how Flash renders visual components.    That led to visiting my Invaluable Links for Flex/Flash Developers page only to discover I had left out some very important links.

So I have added some regarding the MX framework and the rendering process.  Kudos to the authors of those posts.  They are very worthy reads.

The future of this blog? My other blog?

So if you are a loyal reader (ha.. who am I kidding?) then you have probably noticed the lack of Flex/Flash related posts.  Firstly, I apologize for this as I have become somewhat disenchanted with Flex development.  Its not that I don’t enjoy it, its more that I have so little time to share discoveries and I lack the motivation to write about it.  Maybe its the call of the summer.  But its more likely that I have rediscovered my previous passion – music.  Secondly I have way too many interests and I cycle through them occasionally.

Anyway.  If you are a music lover, then you might be interested in reading my other blog – http://raiseyourfists.wordpress.com/.  I like writing and sharing.  I like talking about music too.  So I figure I will redirect my attention to things that I am currently passionate about.  That is not to mean that I will not be posting Flex related post here.  Quite to the contrary, I will be doing just that AND I will keep posting weekly riddles since I think that furthers brain development.  I only hope they are challenging.  Else I will have to break out the MENSA book of riddles.  YIKES!!!

This is an ol’ kickself that I heard on TV the other day:

There are two coins totaling 30¢.  One of them is not a nickel.

Weekly Riddle: Inheritance

An old woman dies leaving an inheritance of $33,333.  There are two fathers and two sons, each receiving $11,111 apiece.  How is this possible?

[note] – this is a lame-o riddle since I didn’t have time to think or find one worthy of your attention.  I have been out of town and hadn’t brushed up on my riddles as of late.  Next week perhaps.
