Riddle: Some more word play

The English language is fascinating to me and I learn something new quite often. I think the fact that it is an amalgam of so many other languages, some closely related and some not, that makes it a truly powerful language. Anyhow, I heard a word the other day that is not widely used or known. I have probably never used it in casual conversation but do appreciate the meaning.

Can you name a word containing 4 consecutive vowels whose meaning is an adjective for being a kiss-ass?

Can you name another word containing a pair of consecutive vowels, repeated consecutively and whose only other letter is found in the word above?

Please refrain from answering in the comments until I have posted the answers in the answers page. BTW, the last two riddles have had their answers posted.

Riddle: some word play

Heard this on my NPR.  This isn’t verbatim but you should get the gist:

Find a 6-letter hyphenated word that means “eager”.  Then for a bonus find the 6-letter hyphenated word that is the opposite of “eager” which contains all the same letters as the synonym except for the 4th and 6th letter.

Please refrain from posting your answers in the comments until after the answer has been posted next week.  Thanks.

Semi-Weekly Riddle: To Catch a Theif

Before we start the answer to last week’s semi weekly riddle has been posted to the answers section. YAR!!!

A cop on the beat spots the suspected criminal exiting a store exactly 27 step in front of him. The cop yells at the thief to stop. The chase ensues. For every 5 steps the cop takes, the criminal takes 8 steps. Two steps in length the cop takes, the criminal has to take 5 steps to equal the same distance. How many steps did the cop take in order to catch the criminal?

  • assume they ran in a straight line
  • please refrain from posted your answers to the riddle until next week so as not to spoil it for other puzzlers.

Semi-Weekly Riddle: How Deep?

Answers for last week’s riddle “What is it” have been posted to the answers section.

A man strolling along happens upon a man digging a deep hole. “Good morning sir,” he said. “How deep is that hole?”. The laboring man digging the hole stopped and replied, “Guess. My height is exactly 5’10”.” The other then asked “How much deeper do you plan to go?”. “I am going twice as deep and then my head will be twice as far below ground as it is now above ground.” replied the laboring man.

Can you determine the current depth of the hole?

Food for Thought: Are there different infinities?

Its been awhile since I last posted any of my not-so-weekly riddles.  I really miss sharing them with you.  So here is some food for thought.

Are there different sizes for infinity?

When this question was first posed to me, I almost immediately said no.  How can one put a limit on a limitless concept?  Or put another way, how can one comparatively assess the sizes of infinite things?

Weekly riddles to continue soon

You may have noticed there aren’t any new weekly riddles. That is partly due to the fact that I am starting a new contract and getting into the swing of things. And then of course summer activities also get in the way.

The other issue is that I don’t like posting riddles that I have not completed and seeing as I have only figured out the easy to moderately difficult ones, I feel I am not challenging you folks. So I will be surfing the web sometime to get some real challengers. Stay tuned.

Weekly Riddle: Inheritance

An old woman dies leaving an inheritance of $33,333.  There are two fathers and two sons, each receiving $11,111 apiece.  How is this possible?

[note] – this is a lame-o riddle since I didn’t have time to think or find one worthy of your attention.  I have been out of town and hadn’t brushed up on my riddles as of late.  Next week perhaps.
